Originally a Swedish settlement called Wiccacoa, Quaker Willaim Penn designed a new city in 1682 and renamed it Philadelphia, meaning “brotherly love” in Greek. From its earliest days, Philadelphia played a major role in American history. The Declaration of Independence was written in Philadelphia and the U.S. Constitution was signed there. From 1790 until 1800, Philadelphia was the first capital of the United States and the seat of government.
The first stock exchange and first U.S. Mint opened in Philadelphia. It also boasts the country’s first Centennial Exposition, first public library and first hospital. And ENIAC, the world’s first computer, was built in Philadelphia in 1946. Today, Philadelphia is the sixth largest city in the U.S., known for hospitality and a host of historical and present day attractions and activities.
The Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) offers 700 daily nonstop flights to 120 cities in the U.S. and 31 international destinations. Located seven miles from downtown, Philadelphia transportation is available via taxis, shuttles and high speed rail line. The city is also a railway hub for Amtrak. Getting around Philadelphia is easy with the city’s network of trolley/buses, rail and subway (SEPTA). If you prefer to drive in Philadelphia, it pays to know that almost all city streets are one-way.
